• Runway To Capitol Hill – Jennifer Lopez In Victoria Beckham Collection

I literally just got back home and instead of doing what normal people do – unpack etc etc, I turned on my computer as I was dying to see what events took place last night.

Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony arrived at a meeting with Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to discuss education in the Latino community on Capitol Hill in Washington.

It has also been reported that Jennifer also met with the President Barack Obama and his wife while doing a tour through the White House.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Jennifer Lopez was wearing a blush sheath dress from Victoria Beckham’s Spring 2010 presentation, which was presented just 4 days ago.

I love how the dress is hugging her curves and doing more justice to the dress than the model ever could.

She looks absolutely exquisite.  Everyone has really raised their game this week.

It’s the right colour for her skin-tone and Victoria will be proud that Jennifer was very matchy matchy with her accessories.

The singer/actress paired her dress with Christian Louboutin heels and a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch.

From the back of Jennifer’s dress, you can see Victoria has kept her trademark exposed two-way zippers as a feature for her collection.

  • LAX Style: Cheryl Cole’s Isabel Marant Jeans

Cheryl Cole was spotted arriving at LAX Sunday.

The media are all over the her for wearing these Isabel Marant Navajo jeans from the Fall 2011 collection because the red crosses look like the X Factor logo.

I’m sure that when she picked these pants the X Factor logo never even crossed her mind.

The rest of her attention-grabbing look included a berry-coloured tweed cropped jacket, bi-colour shades, a navy top and navy Alexander McQueen suede buckled boots.

I think it’s safe to assume that the person who styled her for the X Factor last year is most definitely not styling her now.

  • Rodarte Wins Stella; Schwab Passes Baton

Given the apocalyptic retail forecasts, the chance for an up-and-coming designer to win 100,000 euros in the Swiss Textiles/Stella Award was especially exciting this year. (In fact, we bet that some established designers wish they qualified for consideration.) Sister act Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte walked away with the honors last night, after presenting their collection alongside a worthy cast of contenders Richard Nicoll, Louise Goldin, and Jean-Pierre Braganza. While accepting the award, Kate teared up onstage. “It’s just so overwhelming,” she said. Indeed. This year saw the sisters scoop up the CFDA’s Swarovski Award while garnering extensive editorial attention. Last year’s winner, Marios Schwab, was on hand to pass the baton after presenting his stellar Spring 2009 collection. Asked if he had any advice for young designers winning big cash prizes, Schwab offered, “You have to be very careful that you continue your ideals. Certainly, when you don’t have money, creativity is more experimental. My advice is to stay humble and spend [it] on things that will be valuable for the future.”

Behind the scenes: ‘Inspired’ partnership puts industry on watch

    By Elizabeth Paton

Under observation: well-known for its pioneering timepiece technology the appointment of Dominique Loiseau has been a huge coup for Girard-Perregaux

There will be few outside the luxury watch industry who have ever heard his name. Yet to those in the know Dominique Loiseau needs little introduction. Often referred to as “le dieu vivant de l’horlogerie” or the “the living god of watchmaking” the 63-year old Frenchman has designed and produced some of the world’s most technically accomplished timepieces.

His latest masterpiece the Loiseau 1f4 is described as the most complicated automatic wristwatch in the industry to date and was seven years in the making with two dials 32 functions and eight patents in its movement.

Until now decorative button watches supplier Mr Loiseau has tended to stay behind the scenes over the course of his 30-year career; either in his workshop by Lake Geneva or teaching at the Museum of Watchmaking in nearby La Chaux-de-Fonds.

This may all be about to change following a surprise January announcement by Girard-Perregaux that Mr Loiseau has joined the company’s research and development team.

Well known for its long tradition in complicated movements and pioneering timepiece technology the appointment is a huge coup for the Swiss brand.

“Mr Loiseau is undoubtedly one of the greatest watch inventors in history ” says Michele Sofisti CEO. “His deep understanding and experience of the business as an artisan means he formulates unique replica watches multifaceted projects that for us go far beyond the timepieces themselves. They build an exciting bridge between our heritage and the future.”

Mr Loiseau seems to share a common vision with his new employers saying that his primary motivation for joining the company was the opportunity to work on a new vision for the industry: a core design mechanism that will form the basis of a whole range of pieces – all with the same DNA but in a variety of model and price points.

“Over the last 30 years most brands have used the same prototype to which they then add extra modules or mechanisms. It is time for a change. I want to create a powerful calibre with various complications from which we can then create versions or ‘derivates’. To use the language of the car industry we will reveal an initial V12 engine but then also release a V8 V6 and V4 version. This way someone who won’t ever be able to own the V12 engine can still somehow own a part of their dream.”

Mr Loiseau feels that the venture will revolutionise the way in which luxury watch customers are served; buyers will be able to tweak their purchases to bespoke specifications. “It’s the right answer for us as a forward-thinking brand. Girard-Perregaux will be completely engaging with its clients first hand and answering their bespoke wishes ” he says of the partly completed project the first fruits of which should be unveiled at the beginning of 2013.

Mr Loiseau says the new movement will require the meticulous construction of a synchronisation never seen before between the mechanism and design of a watch.

He talks about the two being “in constant conversation” – how a process of osmosis must be in play to reinforce the expressions of the watch and provoke “emotions” within the internal movements.

Perhaps what makes Mr Loiseau so revered by both chronophiles and industry figures is his ability to see timepieces as both artistic and technical means of expression. He insists he will never be far away from his workshop.

“As a craftsman and watchmaker working with my hands is my lifeblood in the same way that a pianist must play every day to keep his virtuosity. It gives me so much satisfaction to sculpt materials and let my hands give life to my mind’s creations without constraint or limit. I barely ever have ideas when sitting in front of my computer. The watchmaker is like a sponge absorbing all aesthetic and environmental influences and then transmitting them in a form of risky and complex alchemy.”

He also says he finds some of his greatest inspirations when employed in his second great passion after invention; restoration. It was the trade in which he began his career in the 1960s and he takes on several commissions each year.

This preoccupation with resuscitating history has on occasion resulted in some of watchmaker’s most significant personal achievements. “I think the piece that I am most proud of is the ‘Rose des Temps’ a table clock I built for Omega back in 1984 ” he says.

“It caused a real uproar at the time as people had said that mechanical watchmaking had become a dead craft a lost art. I’d like to think I somehow countered that.”

With 9 000 parts 10 000 work hours 32 functions and the most perfected system of asymmetrical mobile tourbillion in the world the clock remains an internationally revered symbol of imagination precision and miniaturisation 25 years later a lasting testament to the Frenchman’s skills.

With his latest position taking him firmly into the limelight what does Mr Loiseau think of the future of the 21st century watchmaker swiss mido watch now valuable as a marketing figure as well as a priceless technician in a luxury brand’s arsenal?

“I don’t mind having a more public profile ” he says after consideration. “However it is more about showing a deep respect from brands to their clientele – a transparency relating to all the toil that goes into sculpting their future works of art. They must know that both craftsman and company share the core values and passions that go into creating the timepieces.”

The eyes of the industry will be watching to see what emerges out of this latest inspired collaboration.

Salma Hayek attended the photocall for her new movie, ‘La Chispa de la Vida’, on Wednesday during the Berlinale Film Festival in Germany.

We weren’t impressed with her premiere look, but she fairs much better wearing Azzedine Alaia.

The navy long-sleeve suede dress with a full, flared skirt was styled with black tights, black Sergio Rossi pumps and silver jewellery.

Her look was completed with wavy ombre locks and a copper lip colour.

  • Michelle Obama In Alexander McQueen – President Jintao State Dinner

Later that same day President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama greeted President Jintao of the People’s Republic of China, on the North Portico at the White House in Washington, D.C. for a state dinner given in his honor.

She floors me wearing an Alexander McQueen Resort 2011 gown which completed a double for her wearing British designers yesterday, as she also wore Roksanda Ilincic.

There are many of you who believe that there are certain style rules when it comes to being a First Lady, but Mrs O marches to the beat of her own drum which is why her style choices have become a world obsession.

Her red gown with a black brush-stroke print as been ever so slightly modified from the runway as the sleeves are less poufy.

Mrs O also wears the dress with one sleeve off-the-shoulder.

This is a great colour and I’m glad she styled the look with a chic updo.

She may have a huge glam squad behind her, but when she steps onto the red carpet she makes everything seem so effortless.

The sign of a true fashion icon.

Definitely a BDOTW contender. It gave me goosebumps.

Beautiful one-of-a-kind Kimberly McDonald earrings completed her look. The unique black geode and ruby earrings accentuated the red hue of her gown perfectly.

  • Who Wore Oscar de la Renta Better? Rihanna or J.K. Rowling

At the 2011 Brit Awards earlier this year, Rihanna wowed the audience when she wore this stunning Oscar de la Renta Spring 2011 creation.

The beautiful singer dazzled in the strapless ivory silk gazar gown embroidered with red carnations, which complemented her fiery red hair perfectly.

Since the gown is such a standout piece, Rihanna chose not to overwhelm it with any accessories.

J.K. Rowling wore a green and rose pink version of the gown (which doesn’t have the same cinched in waist) to the World Premiere of “Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ in London recently.

The author played up the elegance of the dress by accessorizing with some pretty pink pieces including floral Bulgari earrings, a textured clutch and a matching pink diamond cocktail ring.

She opted to wear her hair in a chic up-do and also wear matching baby pink nail polish.

It’s hard to pick a winner for this one since both women styled the dress so differently, but my vote is going to Rihanna.

She looks amazing when she wears anything red and brings out the boldness of her hair colour even more and I much prefer the colour combination of her dress to the one worn by J.K. Rowling.

  • Charlize Theron In Christian Dior – ‘Young Adult’ New York Screening

Charlize Theron attended a screening of her new film ‘Young Adult’ at the Tribeca Grand Screening Room in New York City on Friday night.

The actress and Dior Beauty spokeswoman wore a Christian Dior Pre-Fall 2011 mini dress which she paired with nude sandals and gold bangles.

The Dior dress, with a sheer neckline, modified lace panel and pleated details, is completely charming, but the rest of the look could’ve been more inspiring.

Nude sandals are always a safe bet, but this dress is an ideal blank canvas for that perfect pair of shoes that don’t match anything.

I’m sure Charlize has a pair or two of those lying around.

Note to Char: now is the time to make us all jealous of your shoe closet.
